The individual in charge of a construction product might have a number of titles, including general contractor, project manager or construction project manager, but the basic job responsibilities are similar. Duties include working with the architect and subcontractors, securing permits and equipment and general supervision of the project. Construction project supervisors are typically construction industry professionals with at least five years of experience, and many have college degrees.

The initial phase of a construction project involves design and planning. A construction manager has to work closely with architects and subcontractors to develop and negotiate cost estimates, budgets and work schedules, as well as choosing appropriate construction methods and materials to fit within the budget. A successful construction supervisor needs to have strong people and project management skills to bring everyone together and complete the project on time.

Other aspects of a construction manager’s job include securing all required building or zoning permits, lining up the necessary equipment supplies and labor, as well as day-to-day supervision of the project. Construction supervisors need to be prepared to deal with problems, including weather- or labor-related issues, and develop workarounds if the project falls behind schedule.
